Mr McManus is a 79 year old divorced, retired advertising executive who lost his significant savings in a failed business venture seventeen years ago. Mr McManus now lives in a small, two bedroom unit in a large public housing complex in Waterloo. His unit is quite cluttered and there is some minor squalor – cockroaches were noticed by a visitor recently crawling over piles of paper- work. The second bedroom cannot be used because it is filled with accumulated items such as books, papers, unused furniture, and much of his personal collection of art and memorabilia. Mr McManus receives a modest US pension and this is supplemented be a part pension from Australia.
Mr McManus has no close friends (many have died) but he has an older sister who lives in the Blue Mountains and a married daughter, Angela, who lives in the eastern suburbs with her husband and two children aged thirteen and eleven. John is invited over for lunch with Angela’s family about once a month and is transported there and back by Angela’s husband because Angela does not drive. Mr McManus is very fond of his grandchildren and delights in performing magic tricks for them.
Although Mr McManus knows some of his neighbours, he finds he has little in common with most of them – he calls the “rowdy druggos”. Mr McManus has applied for a transfer through his housing provider to a quieter complex with a greater proportion of older people. Mr McManus usually spends Christmas with his sister but finds her very wearing and only likes to stay for a day or two before wanting to go home.
Health status:
Mr McManus is 179 cm tall and weighs 122 kg. He is chronically tired and sleeps eleven or twelve hours at night, and often naps in the afternoon as well. He has chronic back pain due to a poorly healed lumbar spine fracture eleven years ago. He walks with a stick if he leaves the house but he can only walk about 100 metres before he becomes breathless and sore.
Vocation: retired
Religion, culture and language:
Mr McManus was brought up Presbyterian but is now agnostic. Although he was born and grew up in Sydney, Mr McManus lived in the US for forty years since his early twenties where he worked in advertising. He became a US citizen and surrended his Australian citizenship. He speaks only English.
Reason for Referral:
Mr McManus was referred to the community Aged Care Team by his GP who is concerned about Mr McManus’s problems with pain, mobility and low mood. The GP is asking if the team can provide any options to improve Mr McManus’s overall quality of life.
