My Paper: BED SIDE SHIFT REPORT
Importance of bedside shift Report
A bedside shift report (BSR) enables accurate and timely communication between nurses, includes the patient in care, and is paramount to delivering safe, high-quality care (McAllen et al., 2018). Giving the patient a bedside shift report helps them understand their day’s goals and any tests or treatments that are being withheld. Because the patient knows who their nurses are, it also helps to reduce anxiety. Face-to-face communication is crucial. “Poor communication during handoffs, such as failure to convey relevant information or conveying erroneous or ambiguous information, creates a situation in which the patient may receive unsafe or insufficient care” (McAllen et al., 2018).
Study of Literature
1st Literature
Malfait, S., van Hecke, A., van Biesen, W., & Eeckloo, K. (2018). Is privacy a problem during bedside handovers? A practice-oriented discussion paper. Nursing Ethics, 26(7-8), 2288-2297. https://doi.org/10.1177/0969733018791348
The literature study stated that patients indicate that information is frequently, and mostly unknowingly, shared in semi-private rooms by various healthcare workers. Patients, for example, report that physicians reveal private information in the room while providing diagnoses updates and that their neighboring patient learns about the patient’s health status by receiving wound or post-operative nursing care. The bedside briefing is not the only situation in care that causes an invasion of privacy, and thus it is not unique. Furthermore, nurses frequently fail to protect the patient’s privacy and involve the patient actively. Next, patients in semi-private rooms appear to accept bedside handovers.
Furthermore, the nurses’ point of view appears to be paramount, as patients gave no indications that the bedside handover in semi-private rooms was inappropriate. How can patients accept bedside handovers and have many benefits even though there is no pressing problem with privacy in practice? However, privacy remains a significant barrier for nurses, and many initiatives are delayed or fail? Therefore, in conducting BSR, consideration of patient privacy is crucial for HIPPA violation.
2nd Literature
Bressan, V., Cadorin, L., Stevanin, S., & Palese, A. (2019). Patients’ experiences of bedside handover: findings from a meta‐synthesis. Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, 33(3), 556-568. https://doi.org/10.1111/scs.12673
Little research has been conducted from patients’ perspectives on bedside shift reports. According to the findings of the Literature, implementing bedside shift reports should include educating nurses about patient views and expectations and the areas of concern that they may encounter during bedside shift reports. The study strongly advised presenting the bedside shift reports method, obtaining patient consent, discussing potential critical issues, and the level of involvement preferred at hospital admission. The Literature showed patient-centered care when conducting BSR.
3rd Literature
Buus, N., Hoeck, B., & Hamilton, B. E. (2017). Nurses’ shift reports a systematic literature search and critical review of qualitative field studies. Journal of Clinical Nursing, 26(19-20), 2891-2906. https://doi.org/10.1111/jocn.13655
The studies described shift report practices and identified factors influencing clinical knowledge distribution. Shift report practices were described as highly conventionalized and locally situated, with opportunities for improvisation and negotiation between nurses. Finally, shift reports were described as multifunctional meetings with individual and social consequences for nurses and teams. Innovations in between-shift communications can benefit from this analysis by providing for the many functions of handovers revealed in field studies. The importance of clinical research is that leaders and practicing nurses can consider the opportunities for nurses to gain clinical knowledge and negotiate care.
4th Literature
Clark, A., Wolgast, K. A., Mazur, N., & Mekis, A. (2020). Leading Change in Nurse Bedside Shift Report. Nursing Clinics of North America, 55(1), 21-28. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cnur.2019.10.002
The nurse bedside shift report (NBSR) emphasizes patient-centered care, and implementing the change begins with management buy-in and a solid educational platform. Nurse champions develop on that platform to help foster education among their peers. Registered Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants were given education and tools. The pilot was implemented in two phases in the Medical Oncology Unit, and an incentive program was also running concurrently. A pre-pilot revealed the following anticipated barriers: time to complete NBSR, concerns with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, attending to patient needs, and performing NBSR.
5th Literature
Dorvil, B. (2018). The secrets to successful nurse bedside shift report implementation and sustainability. Nursing Management, 49(6), 20-25. https://doi.org/10.1097/01.numa.0000533770.12758.44
This literature review looks at articles about nurse bedside shift report implementation and strategies that can lead to successful practice sustainability.
For this literature review, Polit and Beck’s evidence hierarchy was used. Patient satisfaction (patient experience with care), nursing satisfaction, and unexpected overtime results can be quantitative or qualitative. Face-to-face bedside handoff is the only nursing report method involving patients, family members, and departing and arriving nurses. According to systematic literature review studies, implementing nurse bedside shift reports can improve the patient experience with care in terms of nurse communication, thus protecting patient safety through proper communication.
