My question: While marriage is considered a common rite of passage in many cultures, there are some government institutions and certain groups that would deny a whole segment of our society the right to marry. (If your last name starts with P-Z, you do this one) Apply two different theoretical perspectives in your analysis, and determine which perspective better explains the ritual or rite of passage to assist in your understanding of the selected cultural item, event, or practice.
My post:
One theoretical perspective that can be applied to the ritual of marriage is symbolic interactionism. According to this perspective, marriage is a social ritual that is used to signify a transition from one stage of life to the next and is a form of public recognition of a relationship. It serves to create a sense of social legitimacy and publicize the commitment the partners have made to each other. Symbolic interactionism also views marriage as a form of social control, in that it is used to regulate behaviour and enforce social norms.
Another theoretical perspective that can be applied to marriage is functionalism. According to this perspective, marriage is a social institution that serves to provide stability and continuity in society. It is a culturally recognized relationship that serves to create a family unit and provide social support. Additionally, marriage is seen as a means of creating a bond between two families, and it serves to create an environment in which children can be raised and socialized.
In my opinion, the functionalist perspective better explains the ritual of marriage. This perspective recognizes the importance of marriage in providing social stability and continuity and emphasizes the role of marriage in creating a family unit and providing social support. Additionally, this perspective recognizes the importance of marriage in creating a bond between two families and providing an environment in which children can be raised and socialized.
The major elements of the ritual of marriage include the exchange of vows, the exchange of rings, the signing of a marriage license, the exchange of gifts, and the wedding celebration. The exchange of vows is used to express the commitment the partners have to each other, and is a public statement of their commitment. The exchange of rings signifies the unity of the couple, and the signing of the marriage license is a legal document that makes the marriage official.
The exchange of gifts is a symbol of love and respect, and the wedding celebration is a time for the couple and their friends and family to celebrate their union. The major elements of the ritual are understood by the participants and observers as symbols of commitment, unity, love, and respect. They are used to express the meaning of the marriage ritual, which is that the couple is entering into a lifelong commitment to each other and are becoming a family.

Respond to the post of a classmate that chose the same example as you did, but that considered a different theoretical perspective. In your post, address how your analysis compares to theirs. How were your conclusions different? How were they the same?
Your next task is to respond to the post of a classmate that chose a different example. In your post, interpret their example using the theoretical lens that you had selected for your own post.
